Launch of Reading’s Corpus of Cypriote Antiquities

Book launch at The Hellenic Centre, 16-18 Paddington Street, London W1U 5AS

This event celebrates the publication of the 113 Cypriote objects in Reading Museums, from the collections of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology at the University of Reading and of the Reading Museum, at the heart of the town. The objects in this publication range from pottery, lamps and metalwork to ceramic and stone sculpture, donated to the museums during the 20th century. Some of these artefacts were collected by the Palmer family during their 19th-century travels in Cyprus while others were formerly in the British Museum. Some specific items were given in honour of specific individuals, such as W.M. Childs, the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Reading. More than 50% of the objects are on display in the Ure Museum while others are actively used by local children as part of the Reading Museum School Loans scheme. The Reading’s Corpus of Cypriote Antiquities will be presented by the curator of Ure Museum, Prof. Amy Smith. Held under the Auspices of the High Commissioner for the Republic of Cyprus in the UK, Mr Euripides L. Evriviades.
